Forced to jump off second floor, girl dies during mock drill in a Coimbatore college | india news

A 19-year-old student died during a mock drill conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in a Coimbatore college on Thursday, police said.

A video of the incident shows the girl, N Logeswari, standing on the ledge on the second floor of the college building and being assisted by NDMA trainer TR Arumugham. She appears to be reluctant.

Eyewitnesses allege the girl was not willing to jump. The trainer then pushed her and she fell hitting her head on the ledge of the floor below.

She was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital, police said.

Logeswari was a second year student of a BBA course at the Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science in Coimbatore.

“National Disaster Management Agency had conducted the mock drill in Logeswari’s college. As part of the drill, the NDMA personnel had asked the boys and girls to jump from the second floor,” a police officer said. Arumugham was later taken into custody on the basis of a complaint filed by Logeswari’s parents.

The NDMA distanced itself from the drill, stating that it had not organised any such event at the college. “It is unfortunate that this incident has happened and we have lost a young life. The NDMA expresses heartfelt condolences to the family. However, the National Disaster Management Authority wasn’t involved in this drill. The trainer wasn’t authorised by the NDMA to conduct such a drill. The NDMA does not approve such drills unless there are adequate safety measures in place,” it said in a statement.
